Tragic event underscores importance of access to mental and behavioral health services

(McLean, VA, September 20, 2013) - The members, stakeholders, and staff of the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association (PRA) are saddened by the shooting at the Navy Yard in Washington, DC on Monday, September 16, 2013. In response to this hearbreaking event, PRA has released the following statement:

"The tragic events at the Washington Navy Yard underscore the central importance of providing access to competent and compassionate mental and behavioral health services. The Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association (PRA) vigorously supports federal and state action to expand funding and support for the invaluable work being done by the members of our behavioral health community. It is only through the expansion of their efforts that we will improve outcomes and reduce the tragic stigma that prevents so many from confronting their mental health challenges.

As the nonprofit leader focused on growing and training the recovery workforce, PRA stands ready to work with federal and state policymakers and other stakeholders to invest in initiatives that diminish stigma and improve access to behavioral health services."
