From the Desk of Steve Miccio:

Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association’s response to the violence in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio is one of extreme sorrow and pain. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of the people who unnecessarily lost their lives last weekend.

Unfortunately the issue of who “pulled the trigger” is too often blamed on mental illness. This is unfounded and prejudicial towards Americans who live with mental health conditions. PRA stands in solidarity with the evidence-based research that has documented over and over that only a very small percentage of people with mental illness commit violent acts. Access to lethal weapons, hatred, racism and intolerance are the real issues our country must work together to solve.

PRA asks that we as Americans demand and work together towards a unified approach to this public health issue affecting all citizens.
