The Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association (PRA) unequivocally opposes the policies and practices of the Trump administration that have caused widespread harm, fear, and trauma to immigrants, asylum seekers, and their families.
We are gravely concerned by documented reports of abuse, unlawful detention, family separation, denial of medical and mental health care, and deaths that have occurred while individuals were in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). When people are afraid to seek mental health care for themselves or their family members, it jeopardizes their health, safety, and ultimately the well-being of our communities.
PRA urges our federal, state and local policymakers to guarantee safe access to needed health care, school care and medical services free of interference as well as trauma-informed medical and mental health care for those in detention and those targeted by immigration enforcement. We stand in solidarity with our immigrant communities by upholding mental health policies and practices that follow the core principles of psychiatric rehabilitation: human dignity, self-determination, recovery, and community inclusion.
